'Kosha' are the sheaths or layers relating to the three bodies of individual existence. Pancha kosha are the five sheaths.
1.Annamaya kosha: is the food sheath which forms the gross physical body ,the stula sharira.'Annam' means food.This sheath is formed from the food on birth and is recycled back into the food chain on death. Stages of change in the physical body are the qualifications of this kosha.
2.Pranamaya kosha: is the vital sheath formed of the pancha pranas (five vital energies) and five karmendriyas (organs of action).This is a part of the astral body.
3.Manomaya kosha: is the mental sheath .It is formed of manas (mind), Chitta(subconscious) and the five Jnanedriyas (organs of senses).This is also a part of the astral body. Emotional responses and attachments arising from that are its qualifications.
4.Vijnanamaya kosha: is the intellectual sheath formed of buddhi (intellect) and Ahamkara(ego).This is also a part of the astral body. Power of Discrimination and awareness are the qualities of the intellectual sheath.
5.Anandamaya kosha:is the blissful sheath.It is the seat of calmness and peace.This is in the casual body.
